Beyond Fasting: A deeper look at 2024 Ramadan in Dubai

ramadan 2024 dubai

“One month of fasting for a reward everlasting.” Most of us know Ramadan as a month-long celebration marked by fasting from dawn till dusk. But this journey is not your average ride – it is a whirlwind of fasting, self-reflection, and spreading love and compassion. Imagine it as a time to hit pause, reconnect with your inner self, and embrace the beauty of giving. As soon as the first crescent moon graces the sky, Ramadan begins, leading us on a path that culminates in a cheerful celebration of Eid al-Fitr, or the “Festival of the breaking of the Fast.”

Now, while Ramadan is familiar to residents and even tourists in the UAE, not everyone grasps its deeper, perhaps more spiritual significance. Here at Treo Homes, we’re all about giving back, and Ramadan gives us the perfect opportunity to do just that. So brace yourself because we are about to show you what makes Ramadan so unique, blending tradition with a modern twist and infusing everyday life with spirituality.

Understanding Ramadan

Understanding the heart of Ramadan begins with recognizing its profound meaning. You might be wondering, “Why all the fuss about Ramadan?” Well, let us break it down for you. Ramadan is like a spiritual boot camp for the soul – a chance to strengthen one’s connection with Allah and humanity.

As the ninth month of Islamic Lunar calendar, Ramadan holds a very significant meaning to Muslims all over the world. It commemorates the month when the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, was revealed to the prophet, Muhammad. Throughout this month, Muslims observe fasting, known as Sawm where they  abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until dusk. While exemptions exist for the elderly, sick, children, and pregnant or lactating women, the broader community dedicates themselves devotedly to this practice.

Talk about commitment! Plus, Ramadan is a time of immense blessing, which makes it the perfect time to seek forgiveness, guidance, and spiritual enlightenment. Honestly, we just got to give credit where it’s due. Our Muslim friends’ discipline, faith, and devotion to this practice is truly admirable!

Rules to follow in Ramadan while staying in Dubai

Observing Ramadan goes beyond skipping meals. It is about embracing a holistic approach to spiritual growth and self-discipline. Here are some interesting practices Muslims do and avoid to boost their spiritual growth during Ramadan.

Do’s:

    1. Fasting (Sawm) Take fasting seriously. It is not just about skipping meals; it is a chance for self- discipline and getting closer to your spirituality.
    2. Prayer (Salah): Engage in extra prayer practices. Spend extra time in prayer and try to connect more with your spiritual side.
    3. Charity (Zakat) Give back to your community. Get involved in charity work and help those in need around you.
    4. Reading Qur’an: Set aside time to read and learn from the Qur’an. It is a great way to seek guidance and wisdom.
    5. Visiting the Sick (Iyadah): It is in the Muslim’s belief that there are great rewards awaiting those who visit the sick as mentioned by the Prophet.

Don’t:

  1. Overindulgence: Do not go overboard with food when you are breaking your fast. During Ramadan, you are expected to practice moderation and be grateful for what you have.
  2. Negative Speech: Refrain from engaging in gossip and any form of negative talk. Such an act is against the spirit of Ramadan. Keep things positive and uplifting during Ramadan.
  3. Neglecting Family time: Spend quality time with your family. Strengthen those bonds and show your loved ones some extra care.
  4. Fighting and arguing: Behave yourself! Focus on developing good behaviors and increase the number of good deeds we do. Fighting and arguing are big no-nos
  5. Drinking or smoking: In respect to Allah’s teachings against wasteful extravagance, you might want to pause on drinking alcohol and smoking during Ramadan public. It is about showing respect and avoiding wasteful habits.

Ramadan serves as a special opportunity for Muslims to strengthen their relationship with Allah, seek forgiveness, and purify their hearts and minds. It instills values of empathy, solidarity, and compassion, fostering a sense of unity among believers worldwide. More than individual spiritual growth, Ramadan promotes societal harmony and community support.

For non-muslims, there are also a few things to keep in mind during Ramadan like eating in private during fasting hours out of respect for those who are fasting. In line with that, some restaurants and coffee shops may also close during the day. While many may still offer a take-away option, you are still discouraged from eating your food in public. Additionally, it would be best to avoid dancing to loud music when in public as this is considered disrespectful to those who are fasting. Dressing more conservatively when in public areas is also highly encouraged during Ramadan.

Ramadan Timings (Restaurant, Offices, and Attractions)

Ramadan sort of changes the vibes of things around, especially when it comes to timings. Something that you need to take note of during Ramadan is the Restaurant, Attractions, and even office timings. During Ramadan, both public and private sector offices usually switch to shorter days, with working hours reduced by 2 hours  – one of the things corporate homies definitely love about this occasion. But  if you’ve got any official stuff to handle in Dubai, you better check the office hours in advance.

The good news is that if you are a foodie or a shopaholic, restaurants and malls often stay later than usual, sometimes even past midnight to make sure everyone can grab a bite or do some shopping after breaking their fast. Yes, the city gets pretty lively at night during Ramadan. Lots of shops keep their doors open later  but  a heads up for party animals – nightclubs are usually closed during the holy month, so you might want to rethink those late-night plans with friends.

Ramadan Timings 2024 (Suhoor & Iftar)

More than anything, Muslims are very particular with the practice of Prayer during Ramadan as it is a time to reflect, seek guidance from, and connect with Allah. The prayer times in Dubai are determined based on the position of the sun, and they mark significant moments of the day

Community Engagement

It has been a practice for both muslims and non muslims to get themselves involved in various community activities. If you are also in for making a difference this Ramadan, roll up your sleeves and get involved in some of the following activities that will surely make your Ramadan experience count.

  1. Donate Food Baskets. You know, giving out food baskets during Ramadan is a big deal. In Islamic Principles, it is a practice that shows compassion and support to those who are fasting and is a great way to bring the community together to share resources. These food baskets play a significant role in supplying essential sustenance for fasting individuals during Suhoor and Iftar.
  2. Volunteer. Giving your time to help others is always a good move, especially during Ramadan when charities are swamped. During this any charitable organizations find  themselves overloaded with the Charity work they do. So lending a hand to your local mosque or charity center can make a big difference in keeping the workflow and keeping up with the distribution plans and food drives, which are crucial in order to help families to receive proper meals during Ramadan Sahur and Iftar.
  3. Donate Books to the Masjid Library. Sharing knowledge is key, right? Of course, donating books is never not a good idea, especially if you are donating books about Islamic teachings. Providing different resources allows people to learn more about Islam and the Islamic faith – which is super important.
  4. Donate Blood. Did you know that donating blood is considered Sadaqah (charity)? It’s true! One of the good deeds you can do during Ramadan is to donate blood. Not only is it a form of charity but you are literally saving lives, which is pretty awesome!
  5. Donate to Refugees in the Camps. Ramadan is all about helping out – especially those in need the most, and that includes refugees. It is a Muslim’s belief that those who go out of their way to support and help fellowmen are the true Believers. Indeed, a true hero is someone who is selfless and generous in spirit – always willing to give back and help others as much as possible.

Ramadan at Treo

With a whole list of community services one can do during Ramadan, Treo Homes makes sure we are also involved in some way. At Treo Homes, we are all about embracing the spirit of Ramadan and putting it into action through meaningful community service. Recognizing the profound significance of this sacred month and the values it embodies, we are proud to partner with The Giving Family to make a difference. This Ramadan, we are stepping up to provide Iftar meals to our brothers in the labor camp, extending a hand of kindness and solidarity during these blessed days.

Our partnership reflects our commitment to social responsibility and community welfare. But let’s keep it real – the spirit of giving and spiritual growth should not be confined to Ramadan alone.

As we go into a spiritual journey during this blessed month, let us embrace the values of Ramadan wholeheartedly, and strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others whole-year round. Let us cultivate a culture of kindness and generosity that transcends the boundaries of this celebration, shaping our actions and interactions every day.

May this Ramadan be a source of blessings, peace, and spiritual fulfillment for all. Ramadan Kareem!
